Build 23 — 5 August 2026

I believe this transcription is accurate, but given the density of Cecil Davis’s printed text, a few errors are almost certainly still there. If you spot anything that doesn’t match the source-page image beside it, please let me know and I’ll correct it.

Source: Cecil T. Davis, ‘Wandsworth Churchwardens’ Accounts from 1603 to 1620’, Surrey Archaeological Collections, Vol. 19, pp. 145–194.

Author: Cecil Tudor Davis (1854–1922), Librarian of the Wandsworth Public Libraries. This is the fourth instalment in the same transcription project as Davis's 1545–1558 volume (SAC Vol. 15), his 1558–1573 volume (SAC Vol. 17) and his 1574–1603 volume (SAC Vol. 18). Davis's own introduction notes a change of account book at this point: a gap of seven years in the surviving records, after which this second book covers 1603 to 1620.

Original text: Digitised and freely available via the Archaeology Data Service.

Editorial note: Davis's transcription preserves the original spelling, contractions, and abbreviated money notation (£/s/d as “li./s./d.”) throughout, which this transcription in turn preserves faithfully rather than modernising. The accounts are reproduced here as continuous transcript pages, matching Davis's own page-by-page presentation, with enlargeable page scans and hover/tap money-translation tooltips as in the earlier volumes. All seventeen account years (1603–4 through 1619–20) are transcribed in full, completing this volume. Transcribed August 2026.

WANDSWORTH CHURCHWARDENS’ ACCOUNTS FROM 1603 TO 1620. COMMUNICATED BY CECIL T. DAVIS, LIBRARIAN OF THE WANDSWORTH PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

IN previous volumes have appeared the preceding portions of these accounts.1

The Parish Registers of Wandsworth commence with the year 1603, and the burials mentioned in these accounts are generally to be found entered in the Registers.

The steeple was repaired at the instance of Queen Elizabeth, and the churchwarden Jasper Dring gives a detailed account of the materials used.

On page 45 “shreedes for size” is a reminder of the old plan of boiling down strips and cuttings of parchment to make size.

The King’s Arms are painted on a board in 1605–6 and hung in the church.

Several entries refer to the large tree in the churchyard under which the churchwardens place a seat.

“Stoole-ball players” are fined in 1608–9.

The hour-glass provided in 1560–1 appears to have disappeared, so in 1609–10 a fresh one is obtained at a cost of xd; this does not last so long as its predecessor, for in 1618–19 another is purchased for vjd; yet the year before a new clock has been bought for vjli.

Protection against fire is effected by the purchase of two dozen buckets, a great hook and ladders, in 1613–14.

A new reading desk and pulpit are put up in 1614–15; possibly the pulpit now in use was then erected.

Scan of printed page 146

A new Communion cup, double the weight of the old one, is purchased in 1616–17.

In 1618–19, mention is made of the Armour kept at the charges of the parish.

Robert Allen is vicar during this period. His signature occurs on page 73, when John Chersley is chosen clerk of the parish, vice Snow, deceased.

1 Vide Vol. XV, page 80; Vol. XVII, page 135; and Vol. XVIII, page 96.

The Churchwardens’ Accounts, 1603–1620

Transcribed faithfully, preserving Davis’s own rendering of the original spelling and abbreviations. Presented as continuous transcript pages rather than itemised lists, given the density of abbreviation and the state of the original manuscript in places.

The sums are given in pounds, shillings and pence — li., s. and d., from the Latin librae, solidi, denarii — written as lowercase Roman numerals in the additive style of the period (so 4 is iiij, not iv). The j seen throughout is not a separate letter: it is simply the last i in a run, given a tailed flourish (as in iiij) to mark clearly where the count of strokes ends. ob. denotes an obolus, or halfpenny. Hover over (or, on a touch device, tap) any underlined sum to see its modern equivalent.

So that this iiijli. xiiijs. and xxvijs. & vjd. laide out over & aboue my receipte as appereth by my other account of repayreing the church there remayneth for me to delyur the next church wardens — xxiijs. viijd.
The line above ties together this ordinary account with the separate church-repair account that follows on this same page — Davis prints them run together, and the arithmetic between the two (against the £7 5s. 2d. flagged on Page 35) doesn’t resolve cleanly from the printed text alone. Transcribed exactly as printed rather than forced into a tidy reconciliation.
1603-4 (addendum): the churchwardens’ account of the church repair.
The account of Jasper Dring for and concerning the repayreing of the churche appoynted to be repayred by the late Queene Elizabeth her commandment to the Bishopp of Caunterburie from him to the Bishopp of the Dioceses and from him to his officiall and so vnto the churchwardens Robert Knarisbroughe & Jasper Dring.

The eight itemised lines above sum to £4 11s. 2d. by my count, against Davis’s printed sub-total of £4 10s. 8d. — a 6d. gap, small and in keeping with the minor discrepancies seen throughout this project; flagged, not forced.
So that the whole Somme of tyleing workmanshipp stuffe & all cometh to — xijli. xjs. jd.

So that now the totall Somme is — xxvli. xs. vjd.
This whole repair account checks out unusually cleanly: every sub-total above matches its itemised lines exactly (or, for the tylers’ own labour figure, within 1d.), all the way through to this final combined total of £25 10s. 6d.

Receaved for rent due to the church of Wandsworth at Midsomer last 1604ls.
Rec. more for rent due to the church of Wandsworth at Christmas 1604ls.
Sum — vli.
The same pattern seen on Page 35: the printed itemised receipts (here, two shillings) fall far short of Davis's own stated "Sum". The closing arithmetic for this account (below) checks out exactly against this £5 figure, so it isn’t a misprint -- there must be further receipts (very likely a carried-forward balance) folded into the "Sum" without being individually itemised on the page. Transcribed exactly as printed.
Jmp’mis layd out for a warrantxijd.
Jt’m the 12th of June for a bill of pʒsentmentiiijd.

So then ther is layd forth xxvs. xd. more for the vse of the church then hath bene received.
Checked: £6 5s. 10d. expended less the £5 received above is exactly 25s. 10d. -- Davis's closing arithmetic here is internally exact, even though it doesn’t reconcile against the two itemised receipt lines on Page 42.
