Wandsworth Churchwardens’ Accounts

Cecil Tudor Davis

Build 5 — 4 August 2026

I believe this transcription is accurate, but given the density of Cecil Davis’s printed text, a few errors are almost certainly still there. If you spot anything that doesn’t match the source-page image beside it, please let me know and I’ll correct it.

Source: Cecil T. Davis, ‘Wandsworth Churchwardens’ Accounts from 1558 to 1573’, Surrey Archaeological Collections, Vol. 17, pp. 135–175.

Author: Cecil Tudor Davis (1854–1922), Librarian of the Wandsworth Public Libraries. This is the second instalment in the same transcription project as Davis's 1545–1558 volume (SAC Vol. 15), continuing the parish's churchwardens' account book without a break in Davis's own page numbering (this volume opens at his Page 66).

Original text: Digitised and freely available via the Archaeology Data Service.

Editorial note: Davis's transcription preserves the original 16th-century spelling, contractions, and abbreviated money notation (£/s/d as “li./s./d.”) throughout, which this transcription in turn preserves faithfully rather than modernising. The accounts are reproduced here as continuous transcript pages, matching Davis's own page-by-page presentation, with the enlargeable page scans and hover/tap money-translation tooltips introduced for the 1545–1558 volume carried over unchanged. Transcription complete: thirteen account years survive in Davis's text, running continuously from 1558–9 to 1572–3 (two would-be years, 1562–3 and 1570–1, are genuinely absent from the source itself, not omissions here). Transcribed August 2026.

WANDSWORTH CHURCHWARDENS’ ACCOUNTS FROM 1558 TO 1573. COMMUNICATED BY CECIL T. DAVIS, LIBRARIAN OF THE WANDSWORTH PUBLIC LIBRARIES.

IN Vol. XV (1900) appeared the earliest Churchwardens’ Accounts of the Parish of Wandsworth now remaining. They covered a period of 13 years, viz., from 1545 to 1558.

The Accounts now printed are in continuation. The pagination refers to the Book from which these have been transcribed. As the Parish Registers do not commence until 1603, these Churchwardens’ Accounts contain the only record of burials. In the early days of Elizabeth’s reign, the payment for “waste of taperes” used at funerals was continued. Afterwards this custom was discontinued, when the Churchwardens only note payments for burials in the church. The parish had the right to charge fees for burials in the nave of the church.

The earliest instance of the use of Arabic figures is on page 69.

In 1561–2 the “forbell” is taken to London and recast; unfortunately the name of the bell-founder is not given.

The “Morys-Cotes” are mended in 1564–5, and a “lone” of the same is made in 1567–8.

Several times payments have been made for the relief of the poor, but in 1558–9 a poor house was built, and in 1572 appears the first assessment for the poor.

In 1572 the Churchwardens painted the Queen’s Arms already in the Church, but when put up there is no record; and in the same year appears the first mention of the town armour.

The names of the Vicars: 1551–1560, George Sharpe; 1560–1, Thomas Acworth; 1561–1585, John Edwyn.

The Churchwardens’ Accounts, 1558–1573

Transcribed faithfully, preserving Davis’s own rendering of the original 16th-century spelling and abbreviations (“Jtm” for Item, “ffor” for for, and so on). Presented as continuous transcript pages rather than itemised lists, given the density of abbreviation and the state of the original manuscript in places.

The sums are given in pounds, shillings and pence — li., s. and d., from the Latin librae, solidi, denarii — written as lowercase Roman numerals in the additive style of the period (so 4 is iiij, not iv). The j seen throughout is not a separate letter: it is simply the last i in a run, given a tailed flourish (as in iiij) to mark clearly where the count of strokes ends. ob. denotes an obolus, or halfpenny. Hover over (or, on a touch device, tap) any underlined sum to see its modern equivalent.
