James Charles Gunyon — Transported for Receiving Stolen Property
James Charles Gunyon (aged 37, clerk) and his wife Sophia were tried at the Old Bailey in September 1827. Sophia had stolen £100 in Bank notes from a pocket-book belonging to Marian Mason, a gymnastics teacher, while employed as a charwoman at her lodgings at No. 3, George-street, St. George, Hanover-square. She handed her husband the £50 note, which he sold to a woman in Wellclose-square for forty sovereigns. They spent the proceeds on new bedding and clothes, and took a holiday to St Albans. Both were found guilty; Sophia was sentenced to death (subsequently commuted), James to transportation for fourteen years. He sailed on the Woodford in April 1828.
