Enclosure of Clapham and Wandsworth Commons — Public Meeting at Stockwell

Considerable sensation has been excited for some time past amongst the inhabitants of Clapham, Wandsworth, Tooting, Battersea, &c., a threat having been held out by Lord Spencer, as Lord of the Manor of Battersea, to cause a Bill to be brought in for enclosing all the waste and common lands in the neighbourhood. On 8th November public notice was given by Messrs. Bicknell and Spedding, his Lordship's solicitors, of a petition for leave to bring in a Bill for "dividing, allotting, and enclosing all commons, open and common fields, meadows, pastures, and commonable lands and waste grounds, within the Manor and Parishes of Battersea and Wandsworth."
