Sailing Race on the Thames — Hard-Run Heat off Wandsworth
Tuesday afternoon, eleven sailing boats started from Blackfriars-bridge. The Lubentia, Captain Aughtree, of five tons, got the start, and kept the lead till she had passed the boat moored off Putney-bridge, and upon her return till she came off Wandsworth, when the Mercury, Capt. Attley, of seven tons, fetched her, shot a-head, and kept her advantage till she came in at Vauxhall-stairs, beating the Lubentia about eighty yards. The Mercury was of course entitled to the silver cup; the Lubentia, as second, to the goblet. It was a very hard-run heat from Wandsworth between them, and great skill was made use of by the commanders. A prodigious number of sailing boats, barges, and wherries, were upon the river; and notwithstanding the rain, the bridges and both shores of the river were crowded with spectators.
