Highway Robbery between Wimbledon and Wandsworth
Last Saturday afternoon two gentlemen in a post-chaise were robbed, by a single highwayman, between Wimbleton and Wandsworth; immediately after which, they returned to the house where they hired the chaise, and giving notice of the robbery, an hostler belonging to the inn, with another person, immediately set out in pursuit of him. Coming towards a gentleman on horseback, and calling out to him to stop, the gentleman, taking them for highwaymen, rose as fast as he could from them; they however came nearly up with him, fired, and lodged the whole of the shot in his back; they then seized him and brought him back to the house, when the post-boy declared he was not the person that stopped them. A surgeon was sent for, who extracted the shot, and the gentleman was brought home to his house in Southwark, on Sunday, very ill.
