THE TENNIS BOOM

L.C.C. to Lay Down Many New Hard Courts

There are least 52,000 lawn tennis players in Greater London who use the courts in the public parks. At present the number of hard courts is not nearly equal to the demand. The London County Council 1a doing its best for park players, but it will be some time before all those who wish it be accommodated can be satisfied.

A considerable stop towards the accomplishment of their desires, however, has been made by the announcement that new hard courts have been sanctioned by the London County Council, and will soon be laid in the following parks and pubic places: Battersea Piark. Brockwell Park, Dulwich Park, Myatts Fields, Wandsworth Common, Wandsworth Park, Ladywell Recreation Ground, Manor House Gardens, Mountsfield Park, Rye Park. Royal Victoria Gardens (N. Woolwich), Telegraph Hill, Clissold Park, Hackney Downs, Mill Field, Springfield Park. Victoria Park, Kilburn Grange, Lincoln's Inn Fields, Parliament Hill, Wormwood Scrubs.

Whether the attention of the committee has been called to the desirability of a shelter being constructed on Plumstead Common, particularly haring regard to the fact that it would be much appreciated by the old people; and that a good sized sheiter near the tennis courts, say opposite the Links Stores, would serve all purposes? 2. 11 so, what action has been taken; and 3. If the answer to the first question is in the negative will he undertake to bring the matter before the committee? The chairman, Brigadier-General R. J. Cooper, replied In answer to (1) and (2), the attention of the committee has not been drawn to the matter certainly for the last three --ars. Pall Mall Gazette - Tuesday 27 June 1922

Mrs. Lloyd George takes the place of the Prime Minister this afternoon, when a tablet will be unveiled on the outside of the house at Wandsworth Common in which he resided for some time about twenty years ago. Mr. Lloyd George occupied another house in an adjoining road, where he suffered a severe loss in the death of his eldest daughter, before he finally migrated to Chelsea, and eventually, on becoming a Minister, to Downing-street.

It was from the house in Wandsworth Common that Mr. Lloyd George, shouldering his golf clubs, might have been seen almost any fine morning during the season mounting the outside of the horse omnibus which took him to Tooting Bec Common. Before he came to South-West London the Prime Minister resided in a flat at West Kensington.
